Disability Insurance for Part-time Employees

My current short and long-term disability insurance company dropped two of my employees because they only work 20 hours a week. Their requirement is 30 hours per week and they won't change that. My broker is struggling to find someone that does permit part time, 20 hour per week employees to be covered. Is it common to require 30 hours of work to be covered?

Answer:

Often, insurers will have certain conditions for insurability. It is quite common for insurers to require that employees be "full time" and to set minimum hours to qualify for full-time work. You could have some trouble finding the right coverage for your people, given their schedule. I would suggest some additional research on the web, and perhaps making use of more than one broker. Each broker will have knowledge of different insurance companies and someone else might just know the right insurer for your situation.
