Finding Lost Insurance Company

Could you please help me find a telephone number or contact informatin for "PENN TREATY" or "PENN TREATY CORP"? My mother in-law has the insurance, and we need to get in touch with them.

Answer: I frequently get questions like this, so let me pass on what I know about finding a company.

Your best information source on companies is the former Dun and Bradstreet, now called DNB. If you go to their website, you can actually look up a company name. I did this with both versions of the company name that you gave me, and several possibilities came up. Without more information about where you are located, or where the company may be located, I couldn't go any further. However, if you do the search, you may recognize a location.

If this doesn't work out, you may need to check with your local business licensing agency, as another option. If you know the company is in your state, it should have its incorporation and / or business license with the state government. This could also help you find it -- and get a phone number. Every state has its own licensing department. If you go to http://www.sba.gov/hotlist/license.html you should find your state's licensing department, and its locations.
