Insurance and Marital Breakdowns

My wife and I are getting separated. Right now we have two cars, both on the same policy. She is moving to another state with one of the cars. Will she have to get insurance in that state? Will it matter that my name is on the registration?

Answer:

You have a number of issues that could affect your insurance in this situation. Given the complexities and the fact that there could be legal implications, I'd recommend getting a half-hour's free advice from a lawyer.

Having said that, your wife should have no problem getting her own insurance on the vehicle (unless she has a poor driving record), even with you on the registration. She will have to get insurance in the state of her residency. The issue with your name being on the registration is one of liability, if your wife gets into an accident. I'd check this out.
