Disability Insurance for Self-Employed

I own a small photography studio with six employees, but it is in the start-up mode. If I become disabled and can't shoot in the field, but can work at a computer, can I claim partial disability? I would have to hire another photographer to cover my shoots.

Answer:

This is a tough question. In most cases, disability insurance is hard to get for those who are self-employed. Further, most disability insurance doesn't allow for "full-time" work of any kind – even behind a computer. I would recommend that you read any policy carefully and understand exactly what you can and cannot do when you are receiving disability payments.
