Grace Period for a Learner's Permit

What is the "grace period" from the time your child receives their learners' permit for being covered under your own insurance? In other words, if they received their permit on Friday evening late can they drive and be insured? Are they automatically covered until you can contact the office?

Answer:

In a word: no. I am not aware of any grace period. If you let your child drive your vehicle and they are not covered under the provisions of your "occasional drivers" clause in your insurance policy, you could find yourself with a problem if they are in an accident. Read the fine print and be prepared to have your child wait (however reluctantly) until you can ensure they are covered.
