Car Insurance for Spouses

I just got married and my insurance agent told me that my wife and I both have to have our cars on the same policy because we live in Washington state. Apparently, Washington is a common property state. Currently we have coverage from two different companies. Besides the benefits of possible discounts, is there a law to combine policies? Are we both covered on each other's vehicles if we keep our policies separate?

Answer:

I suspect you should speak with a lawyer and get a half-hour’s free advice. A lawyer can confirm whether there is a law governing how you manage your policies, as well as confirm whether you are both still covered on each other’s vehicles if you don’t combine policies.
