How to Lodge a Complaint about an Insurer

How do I lodge a complaint against an insurance broker and the insurance company in the state of New York? Are there any sites online to do this? If not, then where do I send my letter of complaint?

Answer:

I would start with your insurance company itself. Address the letter specifically to the person who is in charge of broker relations for your insurance company. Check your insurance company’s website and copy the letter to senior company officials, like the President or CEO.

I’d also contact your state Department of Insurance and find out what their procedure is for complaints. I’d attach a copy of the letter that you sent to your insurance company. If you want, you can also consider a complaint to the Better Business Bureau, assuming that your insurance company is a member.
