Getting Insurance After A Dog Bites

I have a miniature pincher who bit my daughter's boyfriend by the lip, when he leaned over to greet my dog.  Now I am being dropped by my insurance company and I cannot find anybody else. Can you recommend any insurance agent or company who could help me with this matter?

Answer:

As far as I know, once your animal has shown any tendency to "aggression" (such as with a bite), you are going to have a very difficult time getting any company to provide you with liability insurance to cover that pet. However, you should be able to get a liability which would exclude your pet. It's an excellent idea to call around to some local insurance agents or brokers, and see if anyone can give you an idea of insurance companies that would be willing to work with you.

You might also consider looking at an umbrella liability policy, if you don't have one. It will give you liability separate from your basic homeowners insurance.

As for actual liability coverage that would extend to your pet and its activities, my only thought is to speak with your local vet(s). They may be able to point you in the direction of a sympathetic insurer, since animals are their business.
