Policy Lost in Hurricane Katrina

My mother was in Hurricane Katrina; her area flooded. She needs a copy of her life insurance policy. She does not remember the name of her agent.  Please inform me of how to obtain this document.

Answer:

I presume all her documentation has been lost. Otherwise, if she had cancelled checks, she could look at them to find the policy payment. Does she remember even part of the name of the insurance company? If so, she could look them up using the DNB.com company locator tool, and should contact them directly. If she doesn't remember even a partial name, I'd recommend MIB.com and their Policy Locator Service, if the policy was taken out in the past 10 years. She might also contact her bank; if this is a whole life policy and she used it as collateral for any loan, they might have record of it.
