Car Insurance in Buffalo for Quebec Student

My son is studying at the University at Buffalo since July 1, 2006. He will be there the rest of this year and next year as well. If he takes auto insurance in New York state, is he obliged to take a New York State license plate for his car, or can he keep his plate from Quebec, Canada?

Answer:

In most cases, if you are living in a province or state, you have to register your vehicle with that province or state. In fact, in most jurisdictions, if you don't do that within 30 days of moving there, you can be subject to fines.

Without question, if your son takes insurance in Buffalo, NY, then he will have to have a local NY license plate.
