Disability Benefit Length
For Short Term Disability (STD) the benefit period is generally 6 months. Then your Long Term Disability protection takes over.
Here is where it gets tricky: your Long term disability benefit period will depend on your disability insurance policy. Some insurance policies will cover you for a lifetime after a disabling accident or illness. Other disability insurance will only cover you for some period of years (usually between 2 and 4 years) before benefit's will cease. At this point it is expected that you will have re-trained for work suitable to your new physical / mental capabilities.
You play the odds with this choice. Do you think you would be willing to be retrained for other work? Or is your work of the type that you think you could get back into even if you were disabled? Let's say you are a computer programmer - even if you lost the use of your legs permanently you would likely still be able to program. However, if you are currently a football player and you lost the use of your legs your career is over.
The type of disability insurance policy you pick depends on what you know about your own abilities, preferences and the kind of work you do. If it is physical work, you might want to consider a lifetime disability insurance benefit period, despite the higher cost.
